A Scottish Wedding and lots of business education

I went up to scotland for a wedding this weekend, in Avimore near Inverness, actually a town called carrbridge. It pretty remote and surrounded by scenic forrests, with much of the local trade being in outdoor pursuits, and bed and breakfast hotels, decidedly tourist oriented.
Whilst it’s not a rich part of Scotland, or on the poverty line, there seemed to be a limited amount of real opportunity for people up there. Just to give you an idea, Porridge making is a local sporting event, along side chain saw carving and duck racing. Property in the area is amazing affordable, though I was advised it’s definatley not the area to invest in rental due to its low yield.
being up in this neck of the woods was interesting, people were connected with decent enough internet that they could watch BBC iplayer. Work was relatively seasonal due to the tourism trade, and with out any offence, its a sleepy hollow without that much to do.
It struck me that there were a handful of opportunities here, first a paintball site would be a great business, land is cheap, inverness and avimore are both nearby and it would appeal to the local youth. Then there’s affiliate marketing (the big opportunity), this could be a strong area for a local webdesign and advertising firm, the B&Bs, hotels and local tourist attractions make it a good place to setup a PPC and webdesign business to supply the local area. Staff could be affordable as you have lots of young people looking for work and competition would be low as this is still new to the area.
I also had the great pleasure of meeting a high profile Businesswomen, once named entreprenure of the year and who once rubbed shoulders with Tony Blair and Richard Branson. Her advices to me was amazing, some of the gems she imparted are below:
‘all businesses are the same, its all about balancing the fundamental variables and maintaining that balance’
‘take risks whilst your young and have the energy to fight a good fight’
‘learn how to read people and understand what they are looking for and why’
‘listen’
‘find balance in your life between work and play’
‘don’t work for money, work out of passion’
‘the internet is a totally untapped future’
